Death in the Afternoon

Just before my father-in-law's 70th birthday, I found out how much he loved Hemingway, and especially the bullfighting photographs from “Death in the Afternoon.” I picked the coolest one and I copied it. Simple as that. I worked with my favorite colors, black and white, and tried to reproduce the photo. The brush was out of my hands as it painted the toreador's profile and ponytail. It was like closing your eyes, shooting an arrow and getting a bullseye. Poppie loved it. It hangs on the wall in his bedroom.
